With an illustrious career spanning decades, he has illuminated the path of adult education, leaving an indelible mark on institutions across the globe. From his roots at the University of Missouri as Associate Professor of Adult Education/Andragogy to his distinguished tenure at Lindenwood University, John’s commitment to the art of teaching and learning shines brightly. He is honored as an Emeritus Professor and former Chair of the Andragogy at Lindenwood. He chaired 61 doctoral dissertations and served as a committee member for 55 others from 9 universities, nurturing the growth of scholars and fostering a culture of intellectual exploration. His legacy extends far beyond the confines of a classroom, as his innovative ideas have permeated academia and the corporate world alike.

John’s creation of the Modified Instructional Perspectives Inventory (MIPI) is a testament to his visionary thinking. Through rigorous validation and meticulous refinement, he uncovered the significance of “teacher trust of learners” as a pivotal factor in education. This breakthrough insight has enriched the learning experiences of countless individuals, sparking transformative change in classrooms and boardrooms and has been successfully used in 36 doctoral dissertations.

Personal Life

In the heartwarming journey of life, we find a shining example of care and leadership in the story of John Henschke. Born and raised in the embrace of Benton Harbor, Michigan, John’s path was illuminated by the love of his parents, Arthur and Anna Henschke and he was instilled with values that would later shape his remarkable journey.

In 1958, John’s life took a beautiful turn as he embraced a new role – that of a loving husband to Carol Kauer. This union bore the fruit of three wonderful daughters: Connie, Deanna, and Wendy. John’s dedication to his family was unwavering, demonstrating that true leadership stems from compassion, understanding, and nurturing relationships.

Before embarking on his academic pursuits, John spent 9 years in full-time pastoral ministry. This period laid the foundation for his deep understanding of care and service to others. In 1967, he embarked on a new chapter, pursuing studies in Adult Education at Boston University. His determination led him to receive his Ed.D. in 1973, marking a testament to the power of lifelong learning and growth.

John’s influence expanded far beyond borders, as he became a teacher and learner across different lands and cultures. His life became a bridge, connecting hearts and minds, fostering understanding and compassion among people from diverse backgrounds.

Amid all his accomplishments, John’s proudest role is that of a “Papa” and “Great-Papa” to a legacy of 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His joy is found in the cherished moments spent with family, echoing the sentiment that genuine leadership begins at home. The message of salvation through Jesus Christ, his unending love for his steadfast wife Carol, and his devotion to family define his purposeful journey.

In the tapestry of life, John Henschke stands as a radiant thread, weaving care, leadership, and love into the lives he touches. His story reminds us that the legacy we leave is not in titles or achievements, but in the hearts we touch and the lives we nurture. May we all be inspired by his example to embrace the roles of caregivers and leaders in our own families and communities, fostering bonds that shine with the light of compassion and wisdom.
